The Sosonko Variation is one of White’s most popular replies to the Benko Gambit, and occurs after 4. a4 where white declines the gambit. Black usually proceeds in one of three ways: capturing the c4 pawn which leads to sharp games, advancing 4. … b4, or playing 4. … Qa5 (which generally transposes into the advance variation).
